When he arrived at Wildlife Mountain he was distressed, although the person that had found him had done everything correct such as keep him safely wrapped up, even had a warm water bottle to keep him warm, the distress of loosing his mum was evident.
He was treated for shock and given much needed fluid before being fed special Macropod formula.
All joey's coming in to care suffer from shock and stress, how that stress is treated will have great impact on the joey's future in care and ability to survive long term. Joey's do not look as if they are suffering from stress or shock, most people seem to think that the joey is quite happy when picked up after an accident due to their appearance and behavior.
Remember in the wild an animal in distress is easy prey for predators, so wild animals do not show stress.
However make no mistake they are going through all the same emotions as you would in a situation where you had been through an accident, the ambulance arrive and out steps a huge crocodile telling you in a language you do not understand that you are going to be fine. How would you feel?
Add possible injury to that scenario, and you will now start to understand how these animals feel for the at least first week in care, they are frightened, often in pain from injury and stressed.
It is vitally important that you call a wildlife organisation immediately when finding a native animal in distress in order for the animal to be treated correctly from the start. Waiting for a few hours or days often means prolonged pain and stress, please do as this person did, call immediately and give the animal the best chance to survive long term.
Joey is seen here 3 weeks after arrival in to care, now recovered from his ordeal, at ease with other joey's to interact with whilst he grows and develops. At this stage of his development he will hop out of his pouch for a short time then back in his pouch watching the older joeys.
We can not replace his mum, but we can let him grow with others of his own kind, only they can teach him what he needs to learn in order for him to become part of his own world in the wild when he is old enough to be released.
