Black-Stripe wallaby, mum shot by illegal shooters August 2011 On 14 June 2011 this male Black-Stripe wallaby joey approximately 8 months old was brought in to Casino Vet clinic by indigenous Australians having found the joey after illegal shooters had been through the area the night before, it is thought that the joey's mother had been shot, leaving the joey behind to fend for itself. Joey's dependant on their mothers can not survive alone, and will perish over a short period of time, contrary to what you may be told by shooters even those "at foot" do not survive as they depend on mum not only for vital milk, but also to keep them safe and teach them survival skills. Fortunately this joey was found in time and is being cared for with other joey's in care. Although not of the same species wallabies do well together in care, they interact and bond, learn vital behavior skills needed after release, something we as carers can not teach them, only their own kind can do that. We do not know exactly where this joey was found, only that it was in the Tabulam area. We have previously had this species come in from that area, and the release process is by contacting local NPWS ranger for latest sighting of this species in order for us to release back to an area where the young animal is certain to find it's own kind within a very short time after release. This little fellow will be released when he is about 12 months old.
If you would like to read more about this endangered species and why we are in grave danger of loosing this species for good please click here ., What has happened to this species should be a warning to us all in order to ensure it does not happen to other native Australian species.

We would also like to acknowledge the amazing support and help we have had from the Lismore Vet Clinic who have been an invaluable support to both us and the native wildlife of this region.
